In May of 2005, BroMenn bid farewell to a cherished, longtime friend, Mildred Schuler Sterling. Mildred was a member of the 1938 Brokaw School of Nursing. Upon graduation, she moved to Chicago to pursue post graduate studies in psychiatry and behavioral health. As World War II raged, a patriotic Mildred enlisted in military service. In 1944, she was commissioned by President Roosevelt as a second lieutenant. Her tour of duty included 18 months in the South Seas at a hospital attending to soldiers suffering emotional disorders brought on by combat. Mildred was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to Illinois to begin a new career as a nurse consultant.
In the sixties, Mildred and her husband moved to Florida where she was able to pursue her lifelong interest in the care of the elderly. She quickly advanced in the healthcare ranks to administrator of a nursing care facility, gaining professional certification as an administrator. Mildred became known locally and nationally as an advocate for the elderly, even founding a well-regarded annual conference on aging.
Despite the distance, Mildred remained close to her BroMenn ties. She felt strongly about perpetuating the quality of nursing education she received and the high quality care that BroMenn provided to her Illinois family. Mildred's bequeathed her estate to BroMenn Healthcare, the hospital family she loved.
BroMenn has honored Mildred's legacy by inaugurating the Mildred Sterling Lecture Series, beginning in May 2006.
