HeartCaring Event Planned at Eureka

BroMenn Healthcare is hosting a free HeartCaring women and heart disease event at Eureka Community Hospital (101 S. Major Street, Eureka) on Tuesday, June 24. Free screenings will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. From 5 to 6 p.m., Dr. Shane Fogo, a certified HeartCaring family practice physician with BroMenn's Town & Country Healthcare in Roanoke, will provide a free presentation on "Women and Cardiovascular Disease."

Free screenings will include those for peripheral vascular disease and osteoporosis, as well non-fasting cholesterol and blood sugar tests.

BroMenn is launching a campaign to help empower women, especially those ages 45 to 64, to learn more about their heart health. Many middle-age women spend so much of their energy talking care of others that they neglect their own health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women age 65 and older, the second leading cause of death for women 45 to 64 and the third-leading cause of death for women 25 to 44.

Depression, smoking and hormone levels play a much larger role in cardiovascular disease in women than men. Many women miss subtle warning signs of cardiovascular disease, including:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Indigestion
  • Difficulty sleeping

Light refreshments will be provided. Space is limited.  To register for this free event, call 877-270-4968.
